There is a moment in a Lapland winter that everyone remembers: the door opens, the air is so dry and clear that you feel it in your nose, and the snow squeaks under your boots. After that, everything depends on what is against your skin. Cotton gets wet and turns cold, merino stays warm even when damp, and gloves decide how long you can stand looking at the sky. The cabin has underfloor heating, the fell does not
You arrive while it is still dark. The dogs hear the car before you see them, and a hundred voices rise at once: they want to go. The sled sits low, the speed comes on the first hill, and twenty-odd degrees of frost pours over your face like water.
An hour later you know what you put on underneath. Cotton got wet on the first climb and is now a cold film against the skin. Merino holds the moisture in the fibre and keeps warming even damp, and the socks do the same. This basket is the layer no photo shows, and the reason the people in the photos are smiling.
The northern lights do not keep appointments. They come after eleven, or at half past midnight, or not at all, and in the meantime you stand in the snow facing north. First people talk, then they go quiet, and in the end you hear only your own breathing and wonder how silent a place can be.
That is when what is against the skin decides. A body standing still makes no heat, and merino is the fibre that warms anyway. Two pairs of socks mean one pair is dry in the morning. The same set in women's sizing, beanie to match, so the wait lasts as long as the sky asks.
Just as the green arc starts to move, the glove comes off, because the phone will not answer through it. Three photos, and the fingers are wood. That is the quiet truth of the trip: the cold does not come through the jacket but through fingers and toes, because the body pulls blood to the core and leaves the edges to fend for themselves.

A week in Lapland is really a week for your feet. In the morning they walk up the fell, at noon they queue in a café in wet boots, in the evening they look for a warm floor after the sauna. Socks packed at one pair a day run out on Tuesday.
